Suture Removal

Question

Patient has sutures placed in ED setting and returns in 7 days for removal.  Is there a CPT code for removal of sutures in ED setting?

Answer

There is no CPT procedure code for suture removal.  Most facilities do not bill separately for suture removal when the laceration repair was performed in their facility.  They do bill a low level visit if the sutures were placed elsewhere.  You will need to decide if you are going to bill for this service separately.  If you do bill it as a separate charge, a low level ER visit code should be used (99281).
