Drainage Tube Removal

Question

I work in a family practice office and my Doctor removed a drainage tube that was placed in a patient at the Mayo Clinic. The drain tube was from a surgery due to colon and part of samll bowel removed. Is this a procedure or and office visit?

Answer

Based on your description and the fact that the tube was not removed by incision or with the assistance of endoscopy, there is no procedure code option and this service should be factored into the appropriate E&M level.
